Today and tomorrow, Cross Lines, a nonprofit organization based in Kansas City KS, starts distributing school supplies to Wyandotte County families in need. This free school supplies program is part of one of the Cross Lines Highlight Programs called Kits for Kids (K4K). It is their annual school supplies distribution. There has been a constant flow of people going into the Cross Lines Community Outreach Center today to get their school supplies. They are going to give away school supplies until the supplies run out.

Cross Lines started this school supply drive in July when they publicized the program. Donations were collected all the way until July 27th. They appealed to the KC Community to host an “US” drive (Underwear both girls, boys, teens and crew Socks). Boxes, barrels or storage containers were placed at places of employment or churches. They asked people to donate packages of underwear, crew socks, and other essential school supplies. Their goal is to distribute school supplies and underwear/socks/uniform clothing to 1500 students!

With the help of people in Kansas City, Cross Lines was able to collect lots of school supplies. From then, Cross Lines staff and volunteers sorted and counted the supplies donated. They assembled backpacks and supplies to be ready to give to families in need.

To receive the free school supplies, you will need to bring your ID and proof of income.

If you live in Pleasant Valley Missouri, then there is a family that gives school supplies for any Pleasant Valley residents in need. This school supply giveaway will be on Saturday, August 8 between 8am and 10 am. They are going to give away to as many families as they can on a first come first serve basis until donations have run out. No appointments necessary. You need to bring proof of your Pleasant Valley resident such as food stamp card, medicaid card, unemployment check, and so on.

With so many families out of jobs and needing help this school season, the Salvation Army and many other nonprofit organizations are having school supply drives to help those families in need financially. For The Salvation Army, their goal is to help 1,000 children in need in Kansas City.

The Salvation Army supply drive is going on this week and will run through Aug. 7. People in Kansas City area are encourages to donate any school supplies they can afford to donate. Financial donationas are also accepted. Donations can be mailed and earmarked to School Supplies at 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO, 64111.

Where to drop off school supply donations?

The supplies can be dropped off at:

• three area Krispy Kreme stores.

The annual Terrace Lake United Methodist Church School Supply Giveaway is coming up. The Terrace Lake United Methodist Church in South Kansas City MO, or TLUMC, is accepting donations of school supplies and school uniforms in an effort to help local families who are falling on hard times. The donations are for the 2009-2010 school year for school supplies and uniforms.

Last year, nearly 50 backpacks were collected and filled with school supplies. However, it was not anywhere near enough. There were many more families that needed help and did not receive any help. With the economy the way it is right now, people are needing help more. It is a grave financial strain to have to get school supplies and new uniforms.

What to donate?

Anything that anyone can donate to this cause will be appreciated so much. Below is a list of things the Terrace Lake United Methodist Church will be collecting this year. Their goal is to double what they did last year and to help 100 families. They will be taking donations throughout the spring and summer.

When is the donation deadline?

The donation deadline is 8-1-09.

Examples of what school supplies to donate
1 box washable markers
2 boxes of crayons (16 or more)
1 bottle glue
2 #2 pencils
1 box Kleenex
2 spiral notebooks (70-80 pages) – wide rule
1 large pink eraser
1 set of washable watercolors
2 – 2 pocket folders
1 – black ink pen
1 – bottle hand sanitizer

Donations of school uniforms

On top of school supplies, they are also hoping to collect as many uniforms as possible to help the children who are really going to need it. Since they are focusing on Elementary this year, clothing sizes should be from a Child’s size 5 to size 12.

Below is the uniform requirements:

• Solid white or solid navy collared shirts
• Solid navy or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, jumpers, Capri pants or pants/slacks of appropriate size (no knit pants, leggings, jogging or cargo pants, no zippers or pockets on pant legs).
